The Mt. Aetna Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1969 and incorporated in 1971. We proudly protect approximately 3500 people living in a 35 square mile region. It's a fast growing district of Washington County that is a mainly residential and agricultural area. Our department is staffed primarily by volunteers supplemented by paid daytime apparatus drivers.
We serve Interstate 70 from the Frederick County line to the Route 40 bridge. We have several major attractions in our first due area (besides the wonderful Western Maryland landscape); Greenbrier State Park, the Mason Dixon Drag strip, and the Beaver Creek Country Club.
Emergency medical services in the Mt. Aetna district are provided by the Boonsboro Rescue Squad, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services and Community Rescue Service of Hagerstown. Mt. Aetna Volunteer Fire Department also responds as "first responders" on most emergency medical calls in the district.
Serving as a volunteer fire fighter, EMT, first responder, fire police officer, - or even an administrative member - is the experience of a lifetime! Applications for membership are available on the Files section of the site (<- listed on the left). We encourage men and women who wish to serve their community to fill out an application and set up an interview! Interview, you might ask? Yes, we interview prospective members, to check on applicants' credentials and background, and to ensure the new members understand the training required and professional expectations required of the fire-rescue service.
